My Erasmus Experience in Darmstadt

"My name is Shahla, I am an international Master’s exchange student from the University of Padova in Italy, originally from Iran. I spent six months, from March to August, at Hochschule Darmstadt (h_da) as part of my Erasmus exchange, where I completed a comprehensive research project internship at the Department of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology.

During my stay, I worked in the TIAGo Lab on a robotics and machine learning project. My task was to implement and improve a gesture recognition system for the TIAGo robot using YOLO and LSTM models on the ROS platform. I adapted the dataset, replaced some actions, and enabled realtime gesture imitation. This experience allowed me to work with different workflows, embedded devices, and hardware such as Jetson and TUXEDO. I also gained hands-on experience with PyTorch, dataset handling, and real-time system integration.

The supervision and support were excellent. Weekly meetings with my professors and their mentoring helped me to progress steadily. I also really appreciated their feedback and recommendations for my future career, as well as their kind farewell at the end of my mobility. The International Office was also very supportive, helping me from the visa process and course selection to getting familiar with the university and the city, and even assisting with the preparation of the required documents at the end of my mobility.

Besides technical skills, I improved my teamwork, documentation, and intercultural
communication. I would highly recommend this stay to other students who want to experience international teamwork, practical projects, and German culture in a friendly environment."
